DR. LOUISA MOATS

Why do we need to change the way we teach our kids to read — and how do we get there?

Dr. Louisa Moats began marching in 1968 to fight injustice and hasn’t stopped. Nowadays, she pulls no punches when stating literacy is a social justice issue we must solve. How? It begins by understanding the mistakes we made teaching our children to read. From flashcard drills to recitation, teachers often use ineffective instructional techniques due to lack of training on the science of reading. But hope is not lost! Dr. Moats teaches us how a deep understanding of how our brains learn to read can support teachers to bring ALL children, regardless of background, to literacy grade level. Working urgently on all fronts: public, professional, political, we can inspire a renaissance of reading instruction.
